Academic Enhancement Courses

Applications of Learning Theories - CAEN 101 2-credit hours, graded, referred to by students as "Succeeding in College"

Applications of Learning Theory is a course designed to assist students with the transition to college, both academically and socially.  A successful transition is dependent upon self reflection and understanding, and the development of good habits and decision making.  Topics such as time management, goal setting, and study skills are the foundation of each student's ability to be a success in college.  Succeeding in college is a desire of most students.  How each student achieves success is indicative of the development of good "student-centered" habits.

Developmental Courses: Reading, Writing, and Math

According to the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) students who do not pass one or more sections of the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) or one of the alternative tests are required to enroll in the corresponding developmental course in reading, writing, or math.

CAEX 001 BASIC MATH SKILLS-NCB

CAEX 002 BASIC WRITING SKILLS-NCB

CAEX 003 BASIC READING SKILLS-NCB

Theses are all Non Credit Bearing Courses--no college credit is given upon completion.

These courses, taught through the Office of Academic Enhancement, offer small group instruction and individualized lessons.  Students who have failed a portion of the THEA or one of the alternative tests should contact Laurissa Noack for assistance at (409) 741-4340.

Students With Disabilities

Dr. Rick Ertell, provides services to students with disabilities through the Counseling Office. The Office of Academic Enhancement provides support that is specific to academic needs, such as information about study strategies and supplemental instruction or tutoring support. Our tutoring services are available to all students on campus, so that our program provides for an inclusive atmosphere.

For further information, contact Dr. Rick Ertell, at (409) 740-4587.

Academic Advising

Each student attending TAMUG is assigned a faculty advisor by his or her academic department.  Students are encouraged to meet with their assigned advisor regularly.  Department advisors are the best source for academic questions as they relate to a student's degree plan.

The Office of Academic Enhancement does provide academic advising for the students participating in a Learning Community in the areas of course registration, time management, and study skills.  In an effort to provide quality advising, students are encouraged to schedule appointments with one of our staff members.

Academic Intergrity

For many years, Aggies have followed a Code of Honor:  An Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do.

The Aggie Code of Honor functions as a symbol to all Aggies, promoting understanding and loyalty to truth and confidence in each other.

On September 1, 2004, a new honor system was put in place to help prevent and deal with academic dishonesty. You can find more information on this program, called "Know the Code," on the Office of the Aggie Honor System's website at www.tamu.edu/aggiehonor
