TAMUG utilizes a dual advising model. Students participate in mandatory centralized advising for their first year with professional advisors in the Office of Academic Enhancement (ACEN). After the first year, students then move to academic departments for academic advising.

Academic Enhancement Advising

ACEN provides a centralized academic advising experience for students within their first year at TAMUG, as well as all General Academic majors. ACEN advising is mandatory every semester and an Academic Advising Hold is placed on students' accounts that will prevent course registration. Hold notifications and mandatory advising requirements will be sent to @tamu.edu email accounts.

One-on-one ACEN Academic Advising is required every semester for:

  • Incoming Freshmen for first year

  • Students under 30 Scholastic Credit Hours (SCH)

  • General Academics Majors (GACD)

  • Be oriented to degree requirements
  • Understand required courses, prerequisites, and options for core curriculum and electives

  • Select and register for Fall semester courses

As a result of Fall ACEN advising, students will…

  • Assess their first semester academic performance
  • Articulate academic goals 
  • Demonstrate understanding of degree requirements and degree evaluation
  • Be oriented to University academic policy and procedure
  • Be connected to campus resources to be successful
  • Self-select and register for Spring semester courses 

As a result of Spring ACEN advising, students will…

  • Assess their first year academic performance
  • Articulate academic goals 
  • Be introduced to Degree Planner and resources to successfully complete by Fall deadline
  • Self-select and register for Summer (if applicable) and Fall semester courses 
  • Transition to their department for future academic advising
  • Be able to identify and access campus resources to be successful 
Department Advising 
Second-year students with more than 30 SCH will have an academic advisor within their academic department. Certain departments require advising and place an Academic Advising Hold on students' accounts. Please contact your Department Advisor to set-up your one-on-one meeting.

Degree Evaluation

The degree evaluation in conjunction with degree guides are used in advising appointments to review students' progress towards degree completion. This tool is available to students via the "My Record" Tab in the Howdy Portal.

Students are encouraged to run regular degree evaluations to

  • Evaluate progress towards degree completion and graduation requirements
  • Review past courses and grades
  • Determine if registered courses count towards their degree program
  • Determine degree plan and cumulative GPA
  • View and monitor excess credit hours

What-if Analysis

A What-if Analysis is a degree evaluation that can be run for any major offered by Texas A&M University. This is a tool that can be used by students who are thinking about changing majors and want to know which courses will be generally accepted by their new major.
