Once again in 2010, students in the Texas Maritime Academy Cadet Battalion benefitted from the generosity of G & H Towing Company.

ScholarsThe G & H Towing Company Scholarship Program annually provides four $2,500 Summer Cruise scholarship-stipends for TMA cadets who convince company officials they possess the achievement and leadership ability to pursue successful careers in the tug and tow industry.

In a Dec. 6 ceremony at company headquarters on Pelican Island, G & H President Steve Huffman presented TMA Assistant Superintendent Tammy Lobaugh with a check for $10,000.

That gift is funding scholarship-stipends for Andrew Cockerham of Houston; Paul Hendrick of New Orleans; Angus Paterson of Van, Tex.; and Cassandra Sattler of Derby, Kan.

The winners were selected from a group of 12 finalists who interviewed with G & H representatives and submitted a brief essay on one of two selected topics — the effects of new technologies on harbor industries or the propulsion of diesel engines particular to harbor tugs...(Full Story)

Gift of $25,000 from Kirby Inland Marine funds scholarships for TAMUG Texas Maritime Academy Cadets

Kirby Inland Marine representatives – Agustin Colchado, manager of Employee Development, and Ken Shaver, Canal Personnel manager – visited TAMUG in January toKirby Scholars present a $25,000 scholarship check. The gift funds special scholarships for qualifying students in the Texas Maritime Academy Cadet Battalion for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Kirby Inland Marine Scholarship Program annually recognizes top junior and senior students who demonstrate the leadership ability to achieve successful careers in the brown water industry. Each of the six TMA students who are selected yearly to be the university’s Kirby Scholars receives a $4,000 scholarship.

The 2010-2011 academic year winners attending the check presentation were Ryan Carden, a Marine Transportation (MART) major from Atascadero, Calif.; Cory Fontenot, a MART major from Alvin, Tex.; Scott Stock, a MART major from Newport, N.Y.; and Sandy Walker, a MART major from Dallas...(Full Story)
