Four students in Texas Maritime Academy Cadet Battalion earn 2010
G & H Towing Company scholarship-stipends
Once again in 2010, students in the Texas Maritime Academy Cadet Battalion benefitted from the generosity of G & H Towing Company.
 The G & H Towing Company Scholarship Program annually provides four $2,500 Summer Cruise scholarship-stipends for TMA cadets who convince company officials they possess the achievement and leadership ability to pursue successful careers in the tug and tow industry.
In a Dec. 6 ceremony at company headquarters on Pelican Island, G & H President Steve Huffman presented TMA Assistant Superintendent Tammy Lobaugh with a check for $10,000.
That gift is funding scholarship-stipends for Andrew Cockerham of Houston; Paul Hendrick of New Orleans; Angus Paterson of Van, Tex.; and Cassandra Sattler of Derby, Kan.
The winners were selected from a group of 12 finalists who interviewed with G & H representatives and submitted a brief essay on one of two selected topics —
the effects of new technologies on harbor industries or the propulsion of diesel engines particular to harbor tugs.
Each year, G & H selects its scholarship recipients from top junior and senior students at TAMUG. According to G & H officials, primarily the company is looking for the two best students with deck experience and the two best students with engine experience.
To qualify, students must: have completed their junior cruise; be enrolled and in good standing in TAMUG’s License Option program; present a record of academic accomplishment; and cite examples that demonstrate their leadership qualities.
“G and H Towing Company takes great pleasure in providing scholarships each year for four worthy students in the Texas Maritime Academy at Texas A&M University at Galveston,” said Huffman.
“We believe TAMUG’s excellent work in training the next generation of professionals for the marine and maritime industries is a vital service to the Galveston community, the State of Texas and the nation,” he said.
In response, Lobaugh said, “Texas Maritime Academy is most grateful for this ongoing corporate support from G & H Towing Company. This is a fine example of how collaborative efforts from our neighbors can benefit both their industries and TMA. These scholarships provide substantial assistance to the recipients.”
