CAMPUS FIRE DRILLS & SCHEDULE

Hot Work Permits

Hot work includes any activity that involves the use of an open flame or welding activities including arc-welding and oxy-acetylene welding or cutting. Conducting these types of operations on campus requires a permit and specific measures be taken to prevent the possibility of a fire occurring on campus. Please contact the EHS office at (409) 741-4029 for more information and permit applications.

Hands on Fire Extinguisher Training

Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher? Chances are that you haven't, but recent surveys indicate that over 47% of all individuals will be in a situation in which a fire extinguisher will be needed in their lifetime. Will you know how to operate the extinguisher or know how to select the right extinguisher for the type of fire? Throughout the year, the Safety Office will offer hands-on fire extinguisher training on an as needed basis. Classes require a minimum of 20 individuals and may be requested through the EHS Office by calling (409) 741-4029.

Sprinkler System Shutdowns

Occasionally, routine maintenance must be performed on various buildings equipped with sprinkler systems and/or renovation activities on the campus. When doing so, all work must be performed by a licensed contractor specifically permitted to work on sprinkler systems by the State of Texas. Prior to work a shutdown request must be completely filled out at the Safety Office and specific measures taken to ensure the safety of the building occupants and contents. For more information regarding a sprinkler system shutdown, please call the EHS Office at (409) 741-4029.

Fire & Life Safety Inspections

Fire and life safety inspections are conducted at least annually in TAMUG facilities. The goal of these inspections is to help identify potentially unsafe practices and conditions in TAMUG facilities. These are not surprise inspections. EHS will notify the building fire marshal or facility coordinator prior to inspecting a facility. We want to work with building occupants to help ensure a fire safe environment in which to work.

The initial inspection will be conducted in the 1st week of the month

Weeks 2 and 3 will be allotted for corrections to be made.

A follow up inspection will be conducted on the 4th week of the month to check for compliance and then will be turned over to the compliance office if items are not addressed.

All tracking and monitoring of inspections is done with I Forms inspection system. PDF and I Form reports of every inspection with detail are available at any time.

19.2 Some of the items that our inspectors will be looking for include but are not limited to:

19.2.1 Access to the facility for emergency responders

19.2.2 Means of egress and verifying that egress components are unobstructed and in working condition

19.2.3 Electrical safety (extension cords, power strips etc.)

19.2.4 Storage of materials (24” from ceiling, 18” from sprinkler heads)

19.2.5 General Housekeeping

19.2.6 Presence of ignition sources

19.3 At the conclusion of the inspection a report is generated and sent back to the building fire marshal or facility coordinator to be disseminated to the building occupants for them to take necessary actions to remediate any inspection deficiencies.

19.4 In addition to regular facility fire and life safety inspections, EHS conducts inspections in our residence halls and apartment complex as well. Residence hall inspections are conducted during the first few weeks of the fall semester while apartment inspections are conducted during the early spring and late summer semesters.
