Workshop 7/11/06
The CTBS collaborated with the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) and the Galveston Bay Estuary Program (GBEP) to present a day-long “Valuation of Ecosystem Services Workshop.”
The workshop was designed to generate ideas on Galveston Bay ecological systems, and allow for discussions among its participants.
It began with a welcome introduction from Dr. William Merrell, Director of the Center for Texas Beaches and Shores. Following was Mr. Steve Johnston with the Galveston Bay Estuary Program’s perspective, detailing the importance of implementing economic valuation techniques in Galveston Bay.
The HARC Director of Social and Policy Analysis, Marilu Hastings, presented the project history and status, including the main intent of this initiative; the goal is to provide a new understanding of values of ecosystem services. She then reiterated the importance of collaborative research efforts, as the workshop was merely the first phase in this long-range project.
The presentations were broken up into morning and afternoon sessions, given by Dr. Jae-Young Ko, Texas A&M University at Galveston. His PowerPoint’s can be accessed by clicking on the link below.
