"If we get this land, we will all have something to be very proud of.  The land is truly an environmental jewel for our city."

                                        -Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas

The East Lagoon Nature Park design study was prepared by Texas A & M Galveston Marine Resource Management graduate students under the direction of Dr. William Merrell.  The goal of the project was to design a park protecting sensitive habitats, wetland and lagoon areas while best utilizing the economic potential of the land.  Over a semester, students incorporated, with minimum impact to the 800+ acre park, locations for restaurants, kayak rentals, bird-watching stations, hike and bike trails and an interpretive nature center.

In conjunction with the University of Colorado at Boulder and Houston Advanced Research Center, the CTBS participated in a planning session in which a broad section of Galveston residents, architectural experts and professional urban planners collaborated to design a park for the east end of Galveston Island.
