McAllis Point is a large undeveloped area on the west end of Galveston Island. In response to interest within the local community to preserve some of the remaining open spaces on Galveston Island’s west end, the Trust for Public Land and the Texas General Land Office partnered to acquire McAllis Point, a 300 acre tract of undeveloped land that is not marked for commercial or residential development.

The McAllis Point design study was prepared by Texas A & M Galveston Marine Resource Management graduate students under the direction of Dr. William Merrell. The goal of the project was to examine how the acreage could be designed to provide an area for outdoor recreation while preserving the natural habitat and character of the west end of Galveston Island. It also illustrates how the acquisition of additional acreage could be incorporated to create a unique “window to the bay.” Over a semester, the class designed a concept that would enhance the recreational and habitat values of the proposed nature preserve.
