        Dr. Van Zandt's CV

Dr. Van Zandt's research, which has been funded by the NSF and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, centers on the spatial distribution of housing and the consequences for vulnerable populations, including in terms of exposure to impacts from natural hazards and climate change.

Her current research—funded with two consecutive grants from the NSF—focuses on social vulnerability to and recovery from Hurricane Ike in Galveston, Texas.  Dr. Van Zandt has been actively engaged in Galveston, directing collection and analysis of physical and social data related to storm impacts.

As Coordinator of the Master of Urban Planning program at Texas A&M, Dr. Van Zandt connects her research activities to both the education of planning graduate students and the planning profession through applied planning projects and engagement with real communities along the Texas Coast.  She is a faculty fellow or affiliate of the Hazard Reduction & Recovery Center, the Center for Texas Beaches & Shores, the Center for Housing and Urban Development, and the Race and Ethnic Studies Institute; and member of the American Planning Association, having served a recent term on the Board of the Texas Chapter of the APA. Her graduate-level planning courses include courses in urban structure, land use planning methods, applied planning, planning history and theory, neighborhood revitalization, and housing policy.
